July 18, 2008: Mr. Murray Coolican has retired as Ontario's Principal Representative to the Haudenosaunee/Six Nations-Canada-Ontario negotiations. Ontario's new Principal Representative will be Mr. Tom Molloy beginning in September. Mr. Molloy brings a wide range of experience to the current negotiations. He was Canada's chief negotiator for the Nisga'a Final Agreement, the first modern day treaty in the history of British Columbia, and the settlement agreement that lead to the creation of the Territory of Nunavut. Between now and September, Mr. Chris Maher, Director, Community Initiatives Branch, Ontario Ministry of Aboriginal Affairs, will act as the interim lead provincial representative in the negotiations. Ontario is committed to resolving the situation in Caledonia peacefully and we believe that the way to achieve this is through negotiation. The Haudenosaunee/Six Nations, Canada and Ontario have been involved in substantive discussions since May.
The McGuinty government is working together with the Haudenosaunee/Six Nations, Canada, Haldimand County and neighbouring municipalities with a goal of achieving a balanced resolution.
We want to address, together with Haudenosaunee/Six Nations leadership, the nature, the structure and workings of our future relationship.
There is no doubt that the situation faced by the people living in Caledonia and the surrounding areas over the past months has been difficult.
The government is optimistic that by working together, a solution can be found that reflects the interests of the communities of Six Nations and Caledonia.
