Traditional Family Lands Process

What is the Traditional Family Lands process?

The Traditional Family Lands process will identify and transfer Crown land to the Temagami Aboriginal community. As set out in the settlement agreement, the Temagami Aboriginal community may select up to 14 parcels of Crown land, totaling eight square kilometres. Crown lands will be transferred in accordance with the Ministry of Natural Resources established land disposition processes and Ontario's Environmental Assessment Act.

Who will be involved in the Traditional Family Lands process?

The process will involve the Temagami Aboriginal community and Ontario government ministries such as the Ministry of Natural Resources.

How long will the Traditional Family Lands process take?

The process to identify and transfer the Traditional Family lands will take approximately five years from the time of the signing of the settlement agreement.

The Temagami Aboriginal community will select candidate locations during the first two years. After the candidate sites have been chosen, the Temagami Aboriginal community will make an application to the Ministry of Natural Resources and the normal disposition process follows. This process can take up to two years and involves public consultation, environmental reviews and archaeological assessments.

Once candidate sites have been reviewed through the Ministry of Natural Resource's disposition process and Traditional Family Land sites have been approved, the sites will be surveyed and transferred as private property to a corporation of the Temagami Aboriginal community. As provided for in the settlement agreement, if fewer than three square miles of land are selected and approved for transfer, the balance of the lands will be added to the reserve in a predetermined area around Guppy Lake.

What involvement will the public have?

The Ministry of Natural Resources follows an Environmental Assessment process which includes public consultation whenever Crown land is disposed.

This process includes consultation with those affected by a potential disposition, including the municipality, affected individuals and organizations.
